Monaco goal, Flores defense provides Fenwick with edge over Lake Forest

BENSENVILLE —The Fenwick Friars girls hockey team (8-5-1, 4-4-2) always anticipates a defensive battle with Lake Forest and Thursday was no exception.

The Friars pulled out a 1-0 win at The Edge in Bensenville, maintaining their trend of nail-biters with the Scouts.

“Everytime we’ve played (Lake Forest) it’s been a one-goal game, but we were so ready for it,” said Fenwick’s Michaela Monaco. “We came in knowing they were a good team and we kept focus; losing focus doesn’t go well.”

Monaco found the back of the net with 7:27 left in the third period on a whacky bounce off a Lake Forest defender.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a goal like that,” Monaco said. “It was really random.”

Fenwick goaltender Frankie Flores displayed an outstanding performance with 28 saves.

“I kept my confidence,” Flores said. “They can put up a lot of shots, but they’re not accurate so it wasn’t difficult.”

Lake Forest put up most of the shots early on as the Scouts offense looked every bit as good as Fenwick’s defense.

“(Flores) was very solid, but we started very slow,” said Fenwick head coach Mason Strom. “I was very upset when we first started the game. We just weren’t shooting. Slow feet, slow minds, we just weren’t hitting the net.”

Still, the one-goal outcome was expected between the two, with Lake Forest keeper Lindsay Projansky registering 20 saves of her own.

“It’s always a battle with them,” said the Scouts head coach Liz Zorn. “We definitely had our opportunities, they got their goal — hats off to their goalie. She played a great game and it just didn’t fall for us.”
