OAK PARK — Nazareth has had its share of heartache this season with a number of tough losses, but one aspect has not been lacking.

“We told them if their effort continues like it’s been, we’re going to win some of these close games,” Nazareth coach John Bonk said. “We’ve been a pretty good team all year. We’ve played one of the toughest schedules Nazareth has ever played. We want to be ready for the state playoffs. We want our kids to experience what it is like to play top-notch competition.”

The fortunes of the Roadrunners (12-12) changed Saturday when they pulled out an impressive 61-55 nonconference road victory over Fenwick.

Senior guard Dan Kienzle scored a game-high 22 points, including eight in the decisive fourth quarter, to lead the way.

“This was one of my better games this season, but I can’t take all the credit,” Kienzle said. “My teammates were getting me the ball in good spots to score and the team played great defense. Coming up with a big win over Fenwick, our neighborhood rival, was big. They’re a great team.”

Also coming up big down the stretch for the Roadrunners was junior Kevin Connelly.

Seconds after Fenwick’s Keshaun Smith got the home crowd in an uproar with a driving basket to tie the game at 53-53, Connelly answered with an inside basket and was fouled. He hit the free throw to put the Roadrunners up for good at 56-53 with 1 minute, 44 seconds remaining. Connelly scored seven of Nazareth’s final eight points and finished with 13 points.
