CHAMPAIGN — Davonte Mahomes doesn’t have a simple explanation for suffering his first loss of the season Friday morning in the Class 3A state wrestling quarterfinals.
The Oak Park-River Forest 160-pound junior lost to an opponent he had beaten three previous times this season.
Sandburg senior C.J. Brucki defeated Mahomes 9-4 to advance to the semifinals Friday night. Mahomes won his next match Friday, 11-5 over Rockton Hononegah’s Tyler DeMoss, to stay alive for third place in the wrestlebacks.
“I’m not sure what happened,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t plan to be undefeated the whole season. I planned to wrestle hard all season. I guess I felt nervous. There was a lot of anxiety that got the best of me.”
Mahomes (42-1), who finished third at 152 last season, suffered the biggest upset of the Class A quarterfinals at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall.
The last time he faced Brucki (39-6) was in OPRF’s 27-24 win over Sandburg in the Super Duels Jan. 12 at Sandburg.
Two other undefeated wrestlers remain for top-ranked OPRF. Larry Early (44-0) at 132 and Joe Ariola (44-0) at 182 remained perfect entering Friday night’s semifinals.
