OAK PARK — York used a second quarter run to take control of Friday night’s West Suburban Silver battle with Oak Park-River Forest, and then made sure the lead stuck from the free-throw line.

The Dukes knocked down 14-of-17 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 63-52 victory that knotted up the top of the standings.

“We worked all week planning this out,” said York junior Charlie Rose (10 points). “Last week we had a tough 25-point loss (to Downers Grove South), so this week we came out focused on trying to knock them (OPRF) off. This is a big win for us.”

It was the first conference loss for the Huskies (13-5, 5-1) and also snapped a five-game winning streak.

The game was tied five times in the first half before York capped a 12-0 run midway through the second stanza with a Justin Kurash bucket that pushed its lead to 24-16.

OPRF missed four straight shots to open the second half and only managed one basket for more than seven minutes of the third quarter.

York (14-4, 5-1) opened up a 40-25 lead toward the end of the third quarter when senior guard David Cohn buried a 3-pointer. Cohn led all scorers with 28 points, while connecting on 16-of-19 shots from the line.

The Dukes took care of business at the stripe all night, hitting 22-of-28 attempts.

“At practice, we spend a lot of time working on free throws, because we know it is going to be big at the end of games,” Rose said.

OPRF started the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run, and trimmed the deficit to four points on a basket by Alex Gustafson. Gustafson and Erick Locke finished with 15 points each, while Jakari Cammon added 11.

“I do not think we were ready for their (1-3-1) zone defense,” said OPRF’s Virgil Allen. “But that is alright, that is what practice is for.”
