OAK PARK — Fenwick senior guard Luke Lattner didn’t need to be reminded of the importance of Friday’s Chicago Catholic North game against visiting St. Joseph.

He just stepped up when it mattered most to help the Friars beat the Chargers 53-46 and improve to 3-0 in conference.

“It’s big for us,” Lattner said. “We control our own destiny. We have to just keep winning out. We’re on kind of a roll now right now and we’re playing some good basketball. We want to keep it up and hopefully we can win the league.”

Lattner scored a game-high 16 points, including four during the Friars’ 12-0 run to start the game and eight points in the decisive fourth quarter.

St. Joseph (10-9, 1-2 CCL North), which is still playing without sophomore standout point guard Jordan Ash (back injury), took its only lead at 32-31 early in the fourth quarter. But Lattner drained a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run and put the Friars (9-6) ahead for good at 38-32.

“They were coming back, but my teammates did a good job of getting me the ball in spots that I like it and I was fortunate enough to make enough plays to help my team win tonight,” Lattner said.

Fenwick senior Joshua Carlisle came off the bench to score seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter when the Friars made 6-of-7 shots from the field and 9-of-12 free throws.

“We’ve had many great games with St. Joe’s over the years,” Fenwick coach John Quinn said. “The seniors wanted to make sure they stayed in first place. It was a great high school game.

St. Joseph coach Gene Pingatore was honored at halftime for his 902 victories by Gov. Pat Quinn, who is the brother of John Quinn.
