OAK PARK — Fenwick watched an eight point, second-half lead evaporate and then had to scramble to force an extra session when it faced Chicago Catholic North foe Gordon Tech Friday night.

The Friars scored the first two points of the overtime and never looked back, holding Gordon Tech without a field goal in the extra period and earning a 42-35 victory in Oak Park.

Michael Smith hit all four of his attempts from the charity stripe in the overtime for Fenwick (8-6, 3-3), despite missing five of his first six tries during regulation. The freshman guard finished with 10 points and sent the game into overtime when he converted a fourth quarter steal into a 3-point play to tie the game at 34-34.

Gordon Tech (10-6, 1-5) opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and took a 34-30 lead after Jerry Davis scored four straight points. The senior guard finished with 10 points, while Sam Rarick led Gordon Tech with 11 points.

“I knew we had enough in us to come back,” said Fenwick junior Scott Lindsey, who had nine of his team-high 11 points in the first half, including seven in the second period, when the Friars built a 21-16 lead. “We had enough energy, we had played hard the whole game. I thought we were going to buckle up on defense and come back.”

The Rams were held scoreless for the final 3 minutes, 45 seconds of the fourth quarter, and missed four 3-point attempts in the overtime period.

Fenwick’s largest lead came in the third quarter, when Joshua Carlisle buried a 3-pointer to give the Friars a 28-20 lead.
