River Grove students learn in hundreds of ways

RIVER GROVE — Teachers recently turned the number of school days students have had at Rhodes School into a fun learning activity.
The hundredth day of class at the school fell on Jan. 25, so the first-grade teachers at the school came up with several fun learning activities for their students to help them with their counting skills in honor of the special day. At the school there are three first grade classes and each first grade teacher prepared there own activity.
All of the students had the opportunity to participate in each activity like counting 100 pieces of Fruit Loops cereal, then putting the cereal loops on a string and turning it into a necklace and playing a board game that involved the winner reaching 100 points first.
Brian McConnell, assistant principal at Rhodes School, 8931 W. Fullerton Ave., said the students had a good time, but it was a hard for some of the students to fight off the temptation of eating the cereal instead of counting each one.
In Caryn Grim’s first-grade class, students dealt with putting items together in groups of 10 until they reached 100.
“They get to see how big 100 would be,” she said. “It helps them with their counting skills.”
“It’s an enjoyable way to teach them math skills and the kids really enjoy it,” she said. “It’s something out of the ordinary.”
McConnell said the students rotated to each class and were excited to see and interact with teachers they don’t see very often.
McConnell said the students really enjoyed the activity. “It’s all about promoting counting,” he said.
