classes start Feb. 29

The Association of Condominium, Townhouse & Homeowners Associations is hosting “Learn and Lead: ACTHA’s Certified Leader” program, of six sessions, will start with the “Governance” module to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at Oak Park Village Hall, 123 Madison St., Oak Park.

It will also be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting Friday, March 23, at the Mount Prospect Village Hall, 50 S. Emerson St.

Owners in common interest community associations will have the opportunity to take this six-week course to increase the knowledge of proven practices employed by successful community associations. Participants of “Learn and Lead” receive a solid foundation in the fundamentals of the multiple disciplines related to community association living. Upon completion of the six programs, individuals will achieve “ACTHA Certified Leader” status. Individuals may also attend these seminars if not interested in certification.

“Learn and Lead” consists of six modules: “Governance,” “Administration,” “Meetings and Elections,” “Financial Aspects,” “Physical Aspects” and “Insurance and Risk Management.

Michael D. Nardello, candidate for Illinois State Representative of the 78th District, invites area residents for a discussion on how people can work together to improve the financial condition of Illinois with new representation in Springfield. The public town hall meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association’s clubhouse at 178 Forest Ave., in Oak Park (across the street from Austin Gardens). Refreshments will be served.

Nardello’s campaign platform is to bring Illinois to a higher level of fiscal accountability and responsibility through transparency by offering: Town hall meetings, public hearings for the operating budget and capital improvement plan and a 78th District Council made up of constituents from the district.

Scholarship contest
Immigrants Aspire!

Elizabeth Walder, founder and president of Immigration Law Associates in Skokie, announces the “Immigrants Aspire!” scholarships and essay competition. Three scholarship awards — a grand prize of $2,000 and two runner-up prizes of $500 — will be payable directly to each winning student’s college or university. Winners will also be honored at a special reception and their essays will be featured on the Immigration Law Associates website.

Contestants must prepare a 750-1,000 word essay on the topic: “If you could make one major change in the immigration laws, what would it be and why?” Essays must be in English. Entrants must be graduating high school seniors residing in Illinois who will be entering an institution of higher learning in the fall of 2012. They must be immigrants themselves or have at least one immigrant parent or stepparent. In keeping with the Illinois DREAM Act, the immigration status of contestants and their families will not be a factor in eligibility.

Interested students should submit their essays online along with the “Immigrants Aspire” application form posted on the Immigration Law Associates website at www.immig-chicago.com/pages/Scholarship. The deadline for submission is midnight on May 31. Winners will be announced no later than June 30. Final decisions will be based on clarity and persuasiveness (70 percent) and originality (30 percent).
