Oak Park apartment fire closes Austin Boulevard

Fire department units were called to a smoking apartment at 620 S. Austin Blvd. at 4:09 p.m. Thursday.
The caller reported seeing smoke coming from under the apartment’s entry door and heard a fire alarm sounding inside the apartment, according to radio dispatch reports.
Numerous units responded and found a fire within one of the building’s apartments.
Police began pounding on doors in an effort to alert residents and evacuate the building.
Meanwhile, police blocked off Austin southbound at Madison Street and northbound at Harrison.
There were no radioed reports of any injuries, and the fire was extinguised about 5 p.m.
