Repair Cafe at Oak Park Arms March 16

OAK PARK — Got something that needs fixing? Local volunteers may be able to help.

An Oak Park chapter of an Netherlands-based organization called Repair Café is holding its next café on March 16.

The idea: people can bring in broken items that they would otherwise throw away, and volunteer fix-it types try to make necessary repairs, said the local chapter’s co-founder, Nancy Bauer. It’s also a social event, where people can talk and enjoy coffee and cookies.

Volunteers can’t guarantee they’ll be able to fix items, Bauer said, but they’ll give it their best shot. Some have special skills, while others are general handymen.

Bauer thought the idea was perfect for an eco-friendly community like Oak Park.

“I’m a big believer in keeping junk out of landfills,” she said.

Repair Cafés are held once a month. Those bringing items are asked to call 708-848-5251 before coming to give volunteers an idea of what to expect, Bauer said.

The next Repair Cafe will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 16 at the Lifelong Learning Center at the Oak Park Arms, 414 S. Oak Park Ave.
