OAK PARK — An electronic trace of a stolen cell phone led police to one of three suspects in a Jan. 23 street robbery.

Police say Nehemiah J. Beard, 18, of the 300 block of East 144th Street, Dolton, was in possession of a cell phone taken from a Berwyn man. Beard was arrested at 9:55 a.m. Feb. 14 and charged with robbery.

The afternoon of Jan. 23, three men went to the 900 block of S. Oak Park Avenue adjacent to the Blue Line, in response to the Berwyn man’s offer to sell a phone. The seller handed the cell phone to one man, who police say was Beard, to examine. At that point, another man ran up and snatched the phone from Beard’s hand, simulating a theft.

When the Berwyn man ran after the thief and grabbed him, both the thief and Beard started punching the man, then ran off with the phone, police said.

Beard has been ordered held in lieu of $20,000 bond.
