Oak Park news briefs: Election filing period opens Monday

OAK PARK — Candidates seeking seats on the Village, Library or Park boards in the April 9 consolidated election can file petitions beginning Monday (Dec. 17) in the Village Clerk’s Office at Village Hall, 123 Madison St.

Nominating papers will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 21. The office also will accepting petitions from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Dec. 24; and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 26. Village Hall is closed Dec. 25.

Tax preparation volunteers needed

Volunteers are being sought to provide free tax assistance to senior citizens from low- to moderate-income households, including those with disabilities and non-English speakers. An accounting background or previous tax experience is not required to volunteer.

Free training sessions are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays (Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2) in Room R-221 of the Robert M. Collins Center on Triton College’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove.

The tax counseling service is sponsored annually by RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) of West Suburban Cook and Southern DuPage counties.

Money management program

A free program to help individuals on limited incomes manage their finances is available to Oak Park and River Forest seniors.

A trained volunteer will help with bill sorting, budgeting and check writing. The program, offered through the Oak Park Township Senior Services, is sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging and the American Association of Retired Persons. Call (708) 383-8060 for more information.

Help with health insurance claims

Free insurance counseling is available to help Medicare recipients with their claims, supplemental insurance and drug plans, as well as applying for other state and federal benefits.

Counseling sessions are held at the Township Senior Services Center, 130 S. Oak Park Ave. Call (708) 383-8060 to schedule a session.
