HARWOOD HEIGHTS — Izabella Narlock would like those not familiar with Polish food to enjoy some home cooking.
Narlock has owned Baltic Good Polish Food at 7352 W. Lawrence Ave. for three years.
She has lived in the area for five.
“I love to cook,” she said. “These are all my mom’s recipes.”
Narlock said after working for years in restaurants, her desire to open her own took hold.
“I wanted to do something small that offered fresh, homemade Polish food,” she said.
The cozy little storefront operation has about a dozen or so tables, many of which are filled no matter the time of day.
On a cold and windy afternoon, Nora Moore of Schiller Park found solice in the food at Baltic.
“I come at least once a week,” she said. “The food is fantastic. The portions are generous.
“And the chicken noodle soup is out of this world, especially on a day like today.”
For novices, Narlock recommends the Polski Talerz, or Polish Platter, which consists of stuffed cabbage, Polish sausage, sautéed cabbage and pierogi.
“It’s a great plate to try,” she said.
For the more adventurous, the menu features zapiekanka, polboy and myriad hot dishes.
Zapienkanka is French bread topped three different ways, all of which include mushrooms.
The polboy is grilled Polish sausage with onions and pickle on a bun.
Hot dishes, which include a choice of two sides among nine options, feature breaded pork cutlet, breaded chicken breast, and just in time for Lent, cod fish.
Rounding out the menu are soups, salads, grilled dished and seven versions of pierogi.
Narlock said all are welcome at Baltic.
“I’ve lived here for five years,” she said. “This is a great neighborhood. We have all kinds of nationalities.”
