The Oak Park Area Arts Council presents an exhibit of pastel paintings by Mel Thompson during the months of November and December at the Oak Park Village Hall, 123 Madison St.
“I am passionate about the Midwest landscape,” says Thompson, who works exclusively in pastels. “I love its colors, its textures, its shapes and its atmosphere. As an artist it is easy to simply record what you see. The challenge is to go beyond the literal landscape to capture and communicate the emotional response that place and time stirs deep within you.”
Thompson paints on location when time and weather permit, or in her studio working from sketches and photos. She received a BFA in painting from Mundelein College, and is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Great Lakes Pastel Society and the Chicago Pastel Painters.
