Berwyn’s culinary hot spot, Autre Monde, has been lauded with considerable accolades since opening in 2010, including three 2012 Jean Banchet Award nominations.

Fire unfortunately damaged the crowd-pleasing restaurant in the summer of 2012 and temporarily closed the much loved eatery, but visionary and well-traveled chefs, Dan Pancake and Beth Partridge, have been back in the kitchen since Autre Monde reopened last October.

Pancake and Partridge work tirelessly to ensure the award-winning hipster haunt consistently churns out dependable farm-to-table fare with a Mediterranean flair. In addition to serving artisan and ingredient-driven dinners, Autre Monde began serving a Sunday Brunch this month.

“We keep the New York Times on the bar and usually play some fun throwback music,” says restaurant owner Christine Tully Aranza, “so brunch at Autre Monde has the feel of a relaxed Sunday morning at home except our guests don’t have to cook or do the dishes.”

Autre Monde transforms from night to day; sun streams through the windows throughout the morning hours giving the restaurant an airy, family-friendly feeling. The globally-inspired menu is filled with creative takes on a myriad of breakfast classics. Look for fresno-chili infused vodka, tomolives and pickled okra to give Autre Monde’s Bloody Mary a worthy balance of flavors. Flapjacks are reimagined in a whimsical dish called “Partridge and Pancake” featuring chestnut-flower pancakes, oranges and fried quail.

My brunch at Autre Monde began with a pot of French-pressed coffee and a sinful espresso-glazed donut peppered with chopped Marcona almonds. A daily special, the salty-sweet confection was added to the Sunday brunch menu after a few cooks stayed late to play around in the kitchen on a Saturday night. Look for memorable brunch specials, like the espresso donuts, to pop up weekly, but be sure to check out a few of the brunch menu mainstays, too. The hearty lamb hash offers diners a masculine mix of smoked and braised leg of lamb, crispy shredded potatoes, and poached eggs, while the lighter San Marzano tomato poached eggs cooked in a Spanish clay pot offer a more feminine twist on an a breakfast dish.

While adults are sure to enjoy the array of non-traditional menu items and thoughtfully executed cocktails, Partridge and Pancake are happy to accommodate children’s developing palates as well. Patrons won’t find a kids’ menu at Autre Monde, but wee-ones can savor an order of Nutella crepes, a portion of house-made crumb cake or a plate of simply scrambled eggs.

Whether you are flying solo and enjoying brunch at the bar or lingering over shared plates at a larger table, Autre Monde’s inventive brunch is a Sunday standout in our neighborhood.
