The Oak Park Village Board has approved a collective bargaining agreement with the local police union, locking in an uptick in yearly pay increases for police officers represented by the lodge.
On Aug. 25, the board approved a resolution authorizing the execution of a four-year agreement with the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police’s Oak Park Lodge No. 8, the organization that represents police officers in the village.
In addition to a number of minor changes to the successor agreement, the contract will see FOP members in Oak Park receive a slight increase in yearly wage raises. Under the previous agreement, which was in effect from 2011 to 2013, officers received an annual pay increase of 2 percent in 2011 and 2012, followed by a 2.5 percent increase in 2013. Per the new agreement, officers will receive wage raises of 2.25 percent in 2014, followed by a 2.5 percent increase in 2015 and 2016, then capped with a 2.75 percent increase in the final year of the agreement.
Other “non-economic” details of the contract agreement will not be publicized until the FOP finalizes its approval of the agreement. Village Manager Cara Pavlicek said the village hopes that the organization will sign the contract by the end of the week.
Pavlicek said that the agreement did not make specific changes to the officers’ health benefits — all full-time village employees are offered the same health care packages — or to the lodge’s pension plan, which is negotiated on the state level. The other major change, she said, was that the agreement now runs through four years instead of the three-year term seen in the previous contract — an adjustment that she said benefitted both sides.
Lodge No. 8 represents approximately 90 officers on the Oak Park Police Department; bargaining agreements for the force’s sergeants are negotiated separately. Once approved, officers will receive retroactive pay pursuant to the agreement starting from Jan. 1. The contract is due to expire on Dec. 31, 2017.
